Bananas ocupy among tropical fruits a position comparable to that of apples among temperate fruits. Musa is the botanical name for bananas. They are grown over wide areas throughout the tropics from 30oN to 30oS of the equator. The major are the caribbean islands, the central American countries, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil in S. America. The canary islands, ameroons, Ivory Coast, Cong and Tanganyika in Africa, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Plipinenes in Asia and a number of Polynesian islands in the pacific.
